About WiSTEM
OUR ORIGINS
WHO WE ARE
The Women in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (WiSTEM), is a society at the University of Essex, founded in 2020. Our society was created to promote inclusivity and to provide a supportive space for women and underrepresented genders in STEM. We are passionate about providing opportunities that inspire, empower, and uplift women and young girls to study and work in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) fields.

OUR AIMS
WHAT WE DO
Our mission is to inspire, empower and uplift women in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. We encourage our female students and graduates to pursue careers in STEM while motivating young girls to explore these subjects at university through School Outreach. Through our events and initiatives, we challenge stereotypes, highlight opportunities, and showcase role models who can inspire the next generation.

WiSTEM is built on creating a supportive and inclusive environment where members can learn, grow, and connect. From career support and networking to celebrating a shared passion for STEM, we put diversity and inclusion at the heart of everything we do, uplifting our community every step of the way.
WHAT WE HAVE DONE
In the past we have collaborated with School of Computer Science and Electronic Engineering, the Psychology Department, School of Life Sciences and the School of Mathematics, Statistics and Actuarial Science, the Essex Student Union, VTeam Essex, Career Hub & Essex Startups, and the Essex Rebel (SU Student Media).

Moreover, we have collaborated with other STEM, academic and non-academic societies, and delivered standalone events and workshops, from CV building and panel discussions to board games night and welfare coffee sessions. WiSTEM's active involvement and advocacy in raising awareness about diversity in STEM has been recognised both external and internal to the University of Essex. Our awards and other shortlists are as below.
